National League - June 29

Player of the Day: Joe Morgan was 3 for 5 with 2 HR and 3 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Diego Padres 9-7.

Pitcher of the Day: Jim Kaat pitched a shutout against the Montreal Expos. He had a shot at player of the day as well--Jim had two singles in four at bats.

National League - June 28

Player of the Day: Two players get the honor today. Willie McCovey hit a 3-run homer off of Santo Alcala of the Cincinnati Reds in the bottom of the 8th inning to tie the game at 3-3. The Padres eventually won the game 6-5. Mike Tyson hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 9th off of Tom Seaver. The Cardinals won the game 4-3.

Pitcher of the Day: Rich Rhoden of the LA Dodgers pitched a complete-game victory over the Atlanta Braves.

Strange thing happened in this game. All three Montreal outfielders made an error in the same inning. Pepe Mangual made a throwing error, Bombo Rivera muffed a single to allow a Phillie to take an extra base, and Gary Roenicke muffed a fly ball. None of the outfielders had an e-rating above 16. Interesting.

National League - Week 12 in Review

Mike Schmidt is looking like a great choice for NL MVP award after the 12th week of the season. He leads the NL in HR and RBI and is in the top ten in batting average. Joe Morgan is also having a great season so far (2nd in batting and RBI and top ten in HR). Tom Seaver and Steve Carlton look like they'll be competing for the Cy Young Award. The league standings haven't changed. It seems like early in the week the division leaders start to falter only to do well in the weekend games and get their leads back. The Reds are 10 1/2 games ahead of the Dodgers and the Mets are 3 games up on the Phillies.
