Pitcher of the Day: Mike Torrez pitched a 2-hit shutout against the Chicago White Sox. The A’s remain one game behind the Kansas City Royals in the AL West.

Player of the Day: Jerry Mumphrey went 5 for 5 with 3 runs scored as the Cardinals beat the Montreal Expos 5-4.

Pitcher of the Day: Tom Seaver was terrific in beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1. The one run Seaver allowed was unearned and he allowed only two hits while striking out ten batters. The Mets now lead the Philadelphia Phillies by 6 1/2 games in the NL East.

Players of the Day: Joe Morgan and Tony Perez were a two-man wrecking crew as the Reds hammered the San Francisco Giants 13-5. Morgan was 3 for 5 with three runs scored, five RBI, and a home run. Perez was also 3 for 5 with 2 HR and 5 RBI.




Pitcher of the Day: J.R. Richard pitched a 2-hit shutout as the Astros beat the San Diego Padres 8-0.

Player of the Day: Darrell Evans hit a grand slam, tripled, walked twice, and scored three runs as the Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-8.



Pitcher of the Day: Jon Matlack allowed one run as he had a complete-game victory in the first game of an important series against the division rival Philadelphia Phillies. The surprising Mets now lead the Phillies by 4 ½ games in the NL East.
