National League - August 23


Player of the Day: Willie Stargell was 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBI as the Pirates beat the San Diego Padres 6-5.

Pitcher of the Day: Jim Lonborg pitched a shutout against the Atlanta Braves. Lonborg allowed only two hits and didn’t walk anyone.

National League - June 22

Player of the Day: Ed Kranepool homered twice to supply all of the runs for the New York Mets as they beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1.

Pitcher of the Day: Jim Lonborg was one hit away from a perfect game. He allowed a single to   and did not allow another baserunner in the game. The Phillies won 1-0 on a Bob Boone solo home run.

National League - May 4

Player of the Day: Del Unser hit a 3-run homer with two out in the bottom of the 9th inning off of Will McEnaney to propel the Mets to a come from behind 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Fred Norman had a 1-hit shutout going when it all unraveled in the 9th inning. Norman ended up allowing four runs, all unearned.


Pitcher of the Day: Jim Lonborg went 8 innings and allowed 1 run in the Phillies 7-1 win over the Houston Astros
