National League - September 11


Player of the Day: Mike Schmidt went 3 for 4 with a home run and six RBI to help the Phillies to a win over the Chicago Cubs. The Phillies are now five games behind the sliding Mets in the NL East.

Pitcher of the Day: For the second day in a row a Giants’ pitcher made his debut and handcuffed the powerful Cincinnati Reds. This time it was Frank Riccelli who pitched eight innings of one-run baseball. Frank allowed four hits and two walks and struck out nine batters in the win.

National League - September 5


Player of the Day: Mike Schmidt went 3 for 4 and hit his league-leading 36th home run as the Phillies beat the Mets 9-7.

Pitcher of the Day: Jerry Reuss allowed one run in seven innings to earn the win against the Montreal Expos.

The Cincinnati Reds beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2 and clinched the NL West title. Dick Ruthven lost his 20th game.

National League - August 25


Player of the Day: Mike Schmidt had a single, a double, a home run, and a sacrifice fly. Schmidt knocked in three runs and scored twice as the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 7-5. The Phillies are now seven games behind the New York Mets in the NL East.


Pitcher of the Day: Doug Rau shut out the Montreal Expos. Rau allowed six hits and didn’t walk anyone.

Player of the Day: Mike Schmidt had three hits in three at bats (1B, 2B, HR), scored three runs, and knocked in three runs to lead the Phillies to a win over the Houston Astros

Pitcher of the Day: Steve Carlton earned his 17th win by allowing one run in eight innings.
