National League - September 1


Player of the Day: Dave Kingman homered twice and knocked in three runs to help the Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2.

Pitcher of the Day: Dick Ruthven (6-19) allowed two runs in eight innings and earned the win. Dick was able to avoid losing his 20th game.

National League - June 24


Player of the Day: Dave Concepcion was 3 for 4 with a homer and 4 RBI in Cincinnati’s thrilling 9-8 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. After the Phillies tied the game at 4-4, Johnny Bench hit a grand slam to put the Reds ahead 8-4. The Phillies scored 1 run in the 8th and 3 more in the top of the 9th to tie the game. In the bottom of the 10th Pete Rose doubled in Joel Youngblood to win the game for the Reds.

Pitcher of the Day: Dick Ruthven shut out the Montreal Expos 3-0. He allowed eight hits but didn’t walk anyone.

Dick Ruthven Pitches First NL No-Hitter


Dick Ruthven of the Atlanta Braves pitched the NL's first no-hitter on May 5 against the St. Louis Cardinals. He allowed only one walk (Don kessenger with one out in the 6th) and struck out six batters.

National League - May 5

Player of the Day: Wilbur Howard was 2 for 4, including a 3-run homer off of Steve Carlton. The Astros won the game 7-3.
