National League wins All Star Game 10-4

The National League roughed up Nolan Ryan and Fergie Jenkins and won the All Star Game 10-4. Don Sutton was the winning pitcher and Nolan Ryan was the losing pitcher. Joe Morgan was the MVP as he was 1 for 3, walked three times, and scored three runs.

The American League started the scoring in the top of the 2nd when Hal McRae doubled and scored on Toby Harrah's single. Jim Palmer singled Harrah to third and Harrah scored on a Rod Carew single.
Top of 2nd -- AL 2, NL 0

The National League answered with a run in the bottom of the 2nd when Garry Maddox singled, went to third when Steve Garvey singled, and scored on a Ted Simmons sacrifice fly.
Bottom of 2nd -- AL 2, NL 1

The National League tied the score in the bottom of the third when Joe Morgan walked, stole second, went to third on a Thruman Munson error, and scored on Al Oliver's single.
Bottom of 3rd -- AL 2, NL 2

In the bottom of the 4th Nolan Ryan relieved Jim Palmer and gave up a solo homer to Bobby Murcer.

The NL scored three runs in the bottom of the 5th. Joe Morgan doubled and scored on a single by Al Oliver. Steve Garvey singled Oliver to third and Ted Simmons walked to load the bases. Bobby Murcer singled in Oliver and then pinch hitter Pete Rose walked, forcing in Garvey. Dennis Eckersley relieved Ryan and got Dave Concepcion to ground out to end the inning.
Bottom of 5th -- AL 2, NL 6
Fergie Jenkins got roughed up in the bottom of the 6th. Joe Morgan walked and went to third on Bill Buckner's single. Gary Matthews singled to score Morgan, then Garry Maddox doubled to score Buckner and Matthews.

In the top of the 8th the American League scored two runs off of San Diego's Brent Strom. Phil Garner doubled and scored on a triple by Rick Manning. After Strom was replaced by Jim Lonborg Hal McRae singled to score Manning.
Top of 8th -- AL 4, NL 9
The National League added one run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Chris Speier singled, went to third on a Johnny Bench single, and scored on Pete Rose's sacrifice fly.
Bottom of 8th -- AL 4, NL 10

It was a fun game to play. The computer chose the teams based on their performance in the replay, so there were a few players left out (Mark Fidrych, Randy Jones, Greg Luzinski). The computer also didn't choose anyone from the Montreal Expos, so I pretended that Steve Rogers was selected to represent the Expos and just didn't get in the game. All of the position players for both leagues got into the game. A few pitchers for each league didn't get to pitch.

On to the second half of the season!

National League - Week 14 in Review

The National League has reached the All Star Break and there are a couple of surprises. The New York Mets faltered a bit in the first week of July but they are now in first place in the NL East by 4.5 games over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets are 11 games better than their actual pace. Another surprising team is the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs are eight games better than their actual pace.

The NL West is playing out as expected, except the LA Dodgers are below .500 and are 5 games behind their actual pace.

It's time for the All Star Game. I'll choose the starting lineups based on the "All Star Votes" on the statistics page and then figure out the reserves using the rules (at least one representative per team, etc.). After the All Star Game I'll resume the replay and alternate between leagues.
