American League - September 12


Player of the Day: Butch Hobson hit a 2-run homer to help the Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 6-3.

Pitcher of the Day: Marty Pattin pitched a  much-needed six-hit shutout against the Minnesota Twins. The Royals now lead the AL West by 1 ½ games.

National League - September 14


Player of the Day: Marty Perez went 4 for 4 (including a double and a home run), knocked in two runs, and scored twice in San Francisco’s 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres.

Pitcher of the Day: Lynn McGlothen pitched a five-hit shutout against the Chicago Cubs. It was McGlothen’s third shutout of the season and his record improved to 8-10.

National League - September 13


Player of the Day: Willie Stargell homered twice and knocked in three runs as the Pirates beat the NL East leading Mets 4-2.

Pitcher of the Day: Ron Reed earned the save in Philadelphia’s 6-5 win over the Montreal Expos. Reed is 2-0 with three saves in the last ten days. Steve Carlton earned his 20th win.
