Baseball Game of the Week - August 7



This week we travel to Yankee Stadium to see the third place Baltimore Orioles take on the first place New York Yankees. Rudy May starts for the Baltimore Orioles (7-9, ERA) and Doyle Alexander (7-3, 4.22 ERA) will be the starting pitcher for the New York Yankees. Note: these two players had switched teams in a trade so they're pictured in opposite uniforms.

Top of 1st: Al Bumbry led off the game with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single by Bobby Grich. After Reggie Jackson struck out Lee May hit a long home run to left (#19 on the season) to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Orioles.

Top of 2nd: Doug DeCinces led off the inning with his sixth home run of the season. Orioles 4, Yankees 0.

Bottom of 3rd: With two out Sandy Alomar singled. Mickey Rivers hit a double to deep left center to score Alomar. Roy White walked but Thurman Munson flied to center to end the inning. Orioles 4, Yankees 1.

Top of 4th: DeCinces singled to start the inning. Dave Duncan flied out to left field. Mark Belanger doubled to score DeCinces. Orioles 5, Yankees 1.

Top of 7th: Jackson hit a solo home run (#26 on the season). May tripled and scored on a single by Ken Singleton. Orioles 6, Yankees 1

Top of 8th: Dave Duncan singled and went to third on a Bumbry single. Duncan scored on a single by Grich. Orioles 8, Yankees 1

Top of 9th: DeCinces tripled and scored on a single by Duncan, who then scored on a double by Belanger. Orioles 10, Yankees 1

Rudy May pitched a complete game and allowed one run on seven hits to win the game and improve his record to 8-9. Alexander took the loss and dropped to 7-4.

  1. I love SOM and have been playing it since 1967, and it's ALWAYS nice to read about a Yankees loss!!! LOL!!
