National League - September 3

Player of the Day: George Foster went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBI as the Reds beat the Atlanta Braves 13-6. Cincinnati’s magic number to clinch the NL West is down to two games.

Pitcher of the Day: Burt Hooton went 10 innings, allowed one run, and earned the win in a 2-1 win over the Houston Astros

 Cincinnati 13, Atlanta 6
 Los Angeles 2, Houston 1 (11 innings)
 New York 6, Philadelphia 5
The Mets may actually be a "team of destiny" in this replay. The Phillies led 5-2 with one out in the bottom of the 9th. Steve Carlton seemed to have things well in hand. Lefty allowed a couple of hits and a run, so he was lifted for a reliever. Ron Reed allowed two hits and a walk and the Mets won the game.
 Pittsburgh 5, Montreal 3 (game 1)
 Pittsburgh 5, Montreal 3 (game 2)
San Diego 5, San Francisco 3
 St. Louis 6, Chicago 2
