Player of the Day: Joe Rudi hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 7th inning to propel the Oakland A’s to a 7-6 win over the Boston Red Sox.


Pitcher of the Day: Ken Brett pitched a 4-hit shutout against the Baltimore Orioles as the White Sox won 4-0.

Player of the Day: Tim McCarver went 3 for 5 with a home run and 6 RBI as the Phillies thrashed the San Francisco Giants 11-0.

Pitcher of the Day: Randy Jones pitched a 2-hit shutout against the Montreal Expos. The Padres won the game 3-0.

Baseball Game of the Week - August 14

Saturday Game of the Week 8/14/76

Cincinnati at New York


Pat Zachary (12-3, 3.10 ERA in 18 starts) vs. Nino Espinosa (2-0, 3.50 ERA – both games were complete-game wins)

Top of 1st: Ken Griffey singled to left. Joe Morgan grounded into a force play and then scored on George Foster’s double to left center. Reds 1, Mets 0

Top of 4th: Dan Driessen led off the inning with a single. Cesar Geronimo followed with a double to left center but Driessen was thrown out trying to score.



Bottom of 6th: John Milner homered to left with one out to tie the game. After Mike Vail struck out Joe Torre singled and Rod Staiger walked. Jerry Grote singled to score Torre and send Staiger to third. Bud Harrelson walked to load the bases and then Espinosa singled to left, scoring Staiger and Grote. Zachary was replaced by Manny Sarmiento. Bruce Boisclair hit a home run to right to make the score 7-1. Reds 1, Mets 7

Top of 7th: Mike Lum hit for Sarmiento and drew a walk. Pete Rose lined out and Griffey singled to send Lum to third. Morgan walked, loading the bases. George Foster hit into a double play to end the threat. Reds 1, Mets 7.

Bottom of 7th: Joe Torre hit a solo home run off of reliever Pedro Borbon with two out. Reds 1, Mets 8

Espionsa pitched seven innings and allowed one run to earn the win and improve his record to 3-0. Zachary took the loss and is now 12-4. The Mets are now 78-40 and lead the NL East by eight games over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Reds are 83-34 and lead the NL East by 23 ½ games over the LA Dodgers.

Player of the Day: Frank Robinson went 2 for 3 with a home run and 4 RBI in Cleveland’s 10-5 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Pitcher of the Day: Al Fitzmorris allowed one run in eight innings as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 3-1.

Player of the Day: Willie Montanez went 4 for 4 with a home run and four RBI. It wasn’t enough as the Braves lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5.

Pitcher of the Day: Jack Billingham shut out the New York Mets 4-0. He allowed four hits and struck out eight batters. Billingham is now 12-3 on the season

Pitcher of the Day: Nolan Ryan 2-hit the Boston Red Sox and had ten strikeouts. Ryan is now 15-11 with a 2.73 ERA

Player of the Day: Joe Torre had four hits and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th as the red-hot Mets beat the San Diego Padres 7-6.

Pitcher of the Day: Pedro Borbon improved his record to 12-4 as the Reds scored the go-ahead runs in the 8th inning. Pedro allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings of work.
